NAIAS Blog: BMW
BMW introduced its first clean diesel engine to the North American market today with the introduction of the 335d sedan and X5 3.0d SUV. Using a 3.0-liter twin-turbo diesel engine that makes 265 hp, these two models will hit the market this fall as 2009 models. Future implementation in other BMW models is expected, with a diesel option in every model range a possibility before decade's end.
The Bavarian automaker also unveiled the production version of the new X6 Sport Activity Coupe. If you're not sure what an SAC is, think SUV brute meets coupe sex appeal. The all-new model incorporates and all-new 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 that makes 400 horsepower and a whopping 450 lb-ft of torque. Expect that engine to make its way into other large BMWs in the near future, particularly the next 7 Series.
Finally, BMW revealed the 1 Series convertible in front of the North American audience, perhaps because North America figures to be the four-seat convertible's best market. Using a power folding cloth top, the convertible will be offered in both 128i and 135i versions. The big news was the price announcement of just $34,000, a mere five grand more than the coupe version. Expect the convertibles this spring shortly after the coupes arrive in dealers.
